Defining a paraffin-wax grade for sourcing
Paraffin-wax grades can differ in melting range, oil content, colour, physical form and documentation. A sourcing request should state which of these properties matter to the intended application, together with packaging, quantity and handling needs.
01
Begin with application and functional need
Describe how the wax is used and which behaviour matters in the process or finished product. A general request for paraffin wax does not show whether appearance, melting behaviour, oil content or another property is most important when selecting the grade.
- Application and process
- Desired function
- Current comparison grade
- Finished-product requirements
02
State the grade-defining properties
Provide the target melting range, oil-content requirement and any critical appearance, colour or physical criteria used by the buyer. Confirm the applicable test method and units where comparison depends on them.
- Melting range
- Oil content
- Colour or appearance
- Physical form and test method
03
Include supply and handling context
State the preferred slab, pellet or other form, packaging, quantity and destination. Review SDS, storage and handling requirements as part of the source evaluation.
- Preferred physical form
- Packaging and lot expectations
- Trial and routine volume
- SDS, storage and destination
A specific wax enquiry
- 01Link properties to the intended application.
- 02State the melting range and oil-content requirement.
- 03Identify the physical form and packaging.
- 04Include handling, document and delivery needs.
Paraffin-wax questions
01Can waxes with the same melting range be treated as equivalent?+
Not automatically. Oil content, colour, physical form, test methods, documentation and process performance may still differ.
02Can different physical forms be requested?+
Availability depends on the selected source. State the preferred form, packaging, quantity and handling considerations in the enquiry.
This article provides general information for a sourcing review. Material selection and use remain subject to the buyer's technical, quality, legal and EHS evaluation.
